A direct booking is one that comes without paying commission to a channel such as Booking.com. The way to reduce dependence on the channels without leaving them goes through a good website, a Google business profile, returning guests and a consistent price policy.
Why do direct bookings matter?
You pay a commission for every booking that comes through a channel; the rate varies by channel, country and your contract. On a direct booking that commission disappears. More important still, the relationship with the guest stays with you: you get to know them, can bring them back and can contact them directly for next season. On a channel, the guest is first of all the platform’s guest.
The aim is to balance the channels, not to leave them
Booking.com and similar channels are among the strongest ways for new guests to find you, and they provide visibility that a small hotel would find hard to create alone. The target is not to give up the channels but to shift part of the bookings to the direct channel. This reduces both the commission burden and the dependence on a single platform.
Five practical steps
1. A fast, mobile-friendly website
Most guests look on a phone. The site should open quickly, show the rooms with photos and make contact easy. For a small business a complex booking engine is not essential; a clear contact form and a WhatsApp link are often a sufficient start. A booking engine can be added later if you wish. We also offer a website service for small businesses.
2. A Google business profile
When a guest finds you on the map or in a Google search, the first thing they see is your business profile. The address, phone, opening information, photos and reviews should be complete, and it should link to your website. The profile is free and is one of the shortest routes to a direct booking.
3. A consistent price policy
The price you show on your site should not be higher than the one you show on the channels; otherwise the guest books you through the channel. Adding a small advantage to the direct booking (breakfast, late check-out or a small discount) often works. However, your contracts with the channels may contain conditions about price parity; read these conditions before offering the advantage.
4. Returning guests
The cheapest booking is one from a satisfied guest who has stayed before. A short thank-you message after the stay and a direct way to reach you for next season build that bond. For email contact you need the guest’s permission; follow privacy rules.
5. A fast reply
Direct inquiries mostly arrive by WhatsApp, email or phone. A reply given the same day, preferably within a few hours, keeps the guest from drifting to another listing.
What is not measured is not managed
Track the share of direct bookings: what percentage of total bookings comes directly? You can measure your website’s visitors and enquiries with Analytics. Within a few months it becomes clear which step works. The numbers make sense when read together with the channel data taken from your channel manager.
Direct bookings and reviews
A satisfied guest both returns and leaves a good review. Reviews increase both your visibility on the channels and the trust of the guest who comes to your website. See our reviews article for details.
